BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Since graduating in 2017 with his bachelor’s degree in education integrated studies, Alec Richardson has put his skills to work in the political realm. His current role as State Director for U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty follows a nearly seven-year tenure with Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s office that encompassed multiple roles, including his most recent position of Senior Advisor and Director of External Affairs.

Alec pursued his undergraduate studies at UT Martin’s Parsons Center. “I enjoyed being able to be at home while also getting the full college experience,” he said—noting the friendships he made with classmates as being among his favorite memories.

“UT Martin allowed me to seek my true passion in my career and dive deep into subject area,” said Alec when asked about how UTM prepared him for his career.

With an already impressive résumé that speaks for itself in the short time since graduating, the sky’s the limit when it comes to the future trajectory of Alec’s profession.

Work hard and never forget that who you meet today could impact your tomorrow.

Q&A with Alec

The friendships I made with classmates and the support I received during student teaching. I enjoyed being able to be at home while also getting the full college experience.

It allowed me to seek my true passion in my career and dive deep into subject area. It also taught me structure and how to survive in a professional environment.

I recently transitioned to the U.S. Senate to serve as State Director after 6 1/2 years in the Governor’s Office as Governor Lee’s Senior Advisor and Director of External Affairs. My first son recently celebrated his first birthday with my wife Hannah and me.

Control what you can control. Work hard and never forget that who you meet today could impact your tomorrow. Life is cumulative!
